Day 20 • favourite technique I’m going with Day 20 • favourite technique

I’m going with medium rather than technique... I am happiest when pushing oil paint around. Sometimes that’s in a more controlled way, sometimes looser, and more experimental. With every painting I learn a bit more.

Day 19 • From the archives This is one of my li Day 19 • From the archives

This is one of my life drawings from way back, maybe 15 years. We had a model who brought her baby with her and got to draw long poses (this one) and very, very short poses, depending on what the baby felt like doing. I called this ‘After the feed’, the baby was sleeping here post feed. It’s such an intimate moment, so peaceful. I’d love the opportunity to draw more like this. Precious. #21daysinmyartworld

Day 18 • Celebrate I’ve celebrated a few wins Day 18 • Celebrate

I’ve celebrated a few wins in my art life over the years. Getting into competition exhibitions is always a massive thrill. But I’ve decided to celebrate here doing something I love. I’ve always loved making art and am blessed to have a creative day job and side hustle and blessed that I can find windows of opportunity to put brush to canvas. Happiest when my finger nails are caked in charcoal or paint, learning on the job and losing myself in the image.

Day 17 • Largest painting #21daysinmyartworld Day 17 • Largest painting

#21daysinmyartworld

I don’t usually paint very large, mainly because I paint at home in a fairly small room or in a rented room with friends, and have to transport whatever I’m painting in the car. This is the largest so far, at 101cm wide plus frame. It’s of Morpheus, a fabulous shire horse and medal winner, who sadly passed away very recently. I went to visit him one snowy January day, thus the sad light of the painting.

‘Morpheus in January’ is available, currently in my Artfinder shop or DM me for interest. He’s a real impact piece!

One day I’d love to work from a shared studio with space to leave large paintings out, but for now I’ll stick to portable sizes.

And no, this isn’t my lounge 🙃

Day 16 • Smallest painting #21daysinmyartworld Day 16 • Smallest painting

#21daysinmyartworld

The smallest I paint is 10 x 10cm, two of which you can see here, painted on small Pebeo linen panels. This portrait of me and my youngest gets my ‘smallest painting’ vote though, because her head is about the size of a pound coin! Flat angled brush, painting with just the tip.

I do love a small painting with a big frame, as on the landscape, which is currently in my shop, link in bio ☺️#portraitcommissions also open! DM for details!

Day 15 • How I name my paintings A tricky one, Day 15 • How I name my paintings

A tricky one, and I have it on good authority that I’m not alone in finding it hard. I always want to title them with something thoughtful that will add to the piece but sometimes I am so stumped that I’m left with ‘Still life of jug and bowl’. The rain paintings, for example, are all simply named after the place and time of the reference photo, not terrible prosaic.

This piece, which I was bowled over to get into the Society of Women Artists exhibition in 2018, is titled ‘She Walks in the Path of Those Before Her’. (One of my deeper ones). It was painted in response to a museum artefact, a cross stitch sampler by a ten-year-old school girl from the late 1800s. I loved how she’d learnt these skills at school, passed on through generations. Walking now in years when art or craft education is undervalued and underfunded in schools, it’s a reminder to me of what we’re liable to lose. #steamnotstem #21daysinmyartworld

Day 14 • Sold Today’s #21daysinmyartworld cha Day 14 • Sold

Today’s #21daysinmyartworld challenge ‘sold’, sharing the latest piece to leave the comfort of home. This is from a small collection of guinea fowl and chicken paintings that I made after visits to a local wildlife park. I loved the markings on the feathers, watching the birds as they walked around the picnic area.

This piece flew off to its new home a few weeks ago, hopefully it’s settling in nicely!

I created four paintings in this guinea fowl series, two still available in my Etsy shop, with link in bio.

Living where I do, in West Sussex, we’re never far from the countryside, so as much as my work is usually about the portrait and more recently the home, I can’t help sneaking in the odd landscape or county scene.

Day 13 • process insight @taraleaver’s #21day Day 13 • process insight

@taraleaver’s #21daysinmyartworld

Every painting starts with a primed surface, whether primed canvas or paper, and a basic drawing. I often use my fingers as a view finder to get the right composition then draw out the main shapes direct with oil paint in Burnt Sienna, slightly thinned so it makes a fluid line. If it’s in the wrong position or something isn’t working I can scrub it off with a rag and try again. I then start blocking in the main colours, constantly stepping back and assessing. I love fresh, loose paint marks in my work so combine loose passages and the odd sharp mark for contrast. In this 30 in 30 I was also learning to wipe tight areas back, literally scraping or rubbing paint off, to create more interesting passages - a scary thing to do but one of the delights of painting in oil. Near the end I take a LOT of photos with my phone so I can see the work as if from a distance, adjusting tiny elements that aren’t working. Eventually it begins to feel something close to alright.
