I’ve studied life drawing for over ten years, attending classes and life groups in East Grinstead. What began as a New Year’s resolution in 2001 to get back into drawing, these life sessions have done so much for me. They honed my observations skills and what began with drawing – in pencil, pastel, charcoal – ended in an amazing journey with paint, something which I’d never really experimented with.
The life sessions usually lasted three and a half hours, with about two and half of those dedicated to one pose, following the warm up poses and frequent breaks and stretches for the model. If enough people wanted to work on the pose again, a fortnight later, it was repeated giving ample opportunity to complete a painting. And so it was that a few years into life drawing, I taught myself to paint during life class, first in acrylics then in oils. This has lead onto portraits, landscapes, equestrian paintings, many things that I wouldn’t have thought about in before I started in 2001.
